She's covered sports for some of the most prestigious media outlets across the world. She covered football, basketball and Grand Slam Tennis for The Washington Post. Nichols spent nine years at ESPN and won the network two Emmy Awards. The Monday Night Football coverage as an official reporter was a an integral part of her job for the network. Her next move was to CNN and Turner Sports. Unguarded, a show that she co-produced and hosted aired every one week at CNN International. A billion viewers viewed the show worldwide. Nichols worked as a journalist at TNT in the time period reporting on NBA broadcasts such as regular season games, playoffs or All-Star teams. She has also worked for TBS reporting as an anchor for baseball and golf coverage. CBS broadcasted the Final Four. In the 42 year history of the award, it was the only time women were one of the nominees.
